The colour of red wine is determined by both the skin colour of the grape and the length of time it comes in to contact with the juice during the fermentation process.  Given the vast number of red grape varietals with colours ranging from reddish deep purple to bright blue its not surprising red wines can range from almost black to violet, maroon and light red in colour.

There are over fifty red grape varietals commonly used in red wine production across the world today although the most common are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Malbec and Grenache.

We classify all our red wine using two scales.  The traditional 1-5 with 1 representing the lightest wines and 5 the most full bodied as well as our in-house Wine Style classification.  We have four red wines styles Light Delicate Red Wines (feather), Juicy Fruit Led Red Wines (cherry), Spicy Warming Red Wines (chili) and Full Bodied Oaked Intense Red Wines (barrel).

These styles are intended to help group wines that have a similar taste profile regardless of the country they come from or grape varietal they use.
