France is still the UK's favourite wine producer despite the ever increasing popularity of New World wines.  Unsurprisingly our range reflects this with over 50 french wines available on the site from some of the best regions and vineyards in the world.  Not surprisingly Bordeaux wines and Burgundy wines dominate with stand out ranges from Louis Jadot and Joseph Mellot.  These are supplemented by a fine selection of Alsace wines, Vin de Pays wines, Loire wines and Languedoc Roussillon wines.

Two concepts central to higher end French wines are the notion of "terroir" which links the styles of wine to the specific locations where the grapes are grown and the Appellation d'Origine Controlee (AOC) system.  Appellation rules closely define which grape varieties and wine making practices are allowed in each of France's several hundred geographically defined appellations, which can cover entire regions, individual villages or even specific vineyards.

France is the source of many of the most famous grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah) that are now planted throughout the world as well as several wine making practices and styles of wine that are copied and imitated in other producing countries throughout the world.
