Cachaça is the most popular distilled spirit in Brazil and is where all Cachaças originate. The average Brazilian drinks about twenty bottles of Cachaça a year, small in comparison to the Russians who drink thirty bottles of vodka.
Cachaça is made by the distillation of fermented sugarcane.
Cachaça is often said to differ from rum in that it is made from sugarcane juice while rum is made from either molasses or sugarcane juice then aged in oak barrels. Rum is, however, its twin brother.
Cachaça is famously drunk in a cocktail called the Caipirinha, one of the most popular ways of drinking the spirit.
