Origins: France

France is responsible for the creation of many famous liqueurs, specialities and spirits, but arguably the most famous are white Vermouth, Pastis and Cognac. The French created two fantastic pastis brands Ricard and Pernod and then during the 20th century exported them around the world. Both drinks are drunk with water over ice and turn a milky colour when mixed with water. Although both brands have declined since the 1970ís Ricard is still the national drink of France.

Vermouth was developed in the 19th century by Joseph Noilly and then became a major ingredientís in New York Martiniís. Red Vermouth or Rosso was championed by the Italian families of Cinzano and Martini.

Cognac is made only in the region of Cognac and distilled from grapes. Cognac families have for centuries created a beautiful drink from a very beautiful area of France. Cognac is emotive of the area it was born.

The French have created so many beautiful spirit brands, but perhaps their Champagne brands are even more exquisite.
