Cognac, named after the tiny town of Cognac in France, is a brandy produced in the region surrounding the town. It must be made from at least 90% Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche, or Colombard grapes.The Cognac region is recognised with its very own appellation controlee. This means that every Cognac is a brandy but every brandy is not a Cognac.
Courvoisier is famously known as the cognac of Napoleon.
Martell is one of the four great Cognac houses and was founded by Jean Martell in 1715.
Remy Martin the Champagne Cognac maker can trace its roots back to 1724 when the winemaker established the company that to this day bears his name.
