Calvados
This ancient spirit dates back to the 8th century. The first known Norman distillation was carried out by ‘Lord’ de Gouberville in 1554.
In the 17th century the area called ‘Calvados’ was created after the French Revolution. In the 19th century output increased with industrial distillation and the working class fashion for ‘Café-calva’. When a phylloxera outbreak devastated the vineyards of France and Europe, calvados experienced a boom.
Calvados has struggled in recent years and, despite being an amazing drink, has become a well kept secret among spirit drinkers. Maybe one day the spirit will be celebrated again.
