Armagnac is a distinctive kind of brandy, or eau de vie, made of the same grapes as Cognac and undergoing the same ageing in oak barrels.
It is distinctive from Cognac because it is produced using column still distillation, whereas Cognac is distilled in pot stills.
The name Armagnac comes from the Armagnac region of France where it originates.
Its volume of production is significantly lower than that of the Cognac region, but it is well loved by its drinkers. Historically Armagnac is two hundred years older than Cognac.
